Kinect Hack + VJing at Psylent Night

Psylent Night is an outdoor party in Wellington where Mohawk Media, Sam Minnee and I put on the visuals. We ran a Kinect hack called MikuMiku dance and connected it to a V4 to VJ behind the dancer.

Music video – Mix & Mash

My entry for the competition Mix and Mash – aimed at encouraging open data and open content in New Zealand. This video was made using footage from the Digital NZ archives and using processing to generate audio spectrums then overlaying those and mixing them up using Resolume Avenue. I have been wanting to do this for quite some time and this was a great opportunity to actually sit down and get it done. Enjoy and please vote for meeeee!

Nerdnite is a fantastic lil gathering of…nerds (and geeks) consisting of (mostly) presentations and drinking. Nerdnite started in Boston and now thanks to Aimee Whitcroft (@teh_aimee) and Brian Calhoun (@unbrand) we have Nerdnite in Wellington!

First night was amazing, its not often I stay out until 2am on a Monday and talk to people about AI & space travel among other things. I filmed the night so here is Daniel Spector talking about the history of the automobile, Chelfyn Baxter and his entertaining presentation on how to get humans into orbit, Matthew Holloway on copyright in NZ and Joel Pitt on AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) and his OpenCog project.

…if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then debating whether the duck actually exists is mostly pointless

From now on we are going to be streaming these live so I will post up links to that closer to the time.

Agragr aggregates and filters news as it hits the front page of various websites so you don’t have to keep refreshing sites and browsing around for new content. It was built in 48 hours for the Rails Rumble.

It is currently pulling hacker news, metafilter, fark and a number of reddits as things hit their front pages. You can check out the source on github.

I am so excited to announce that the Speed of Sound project is a finalist in the NZ Open Source Awards! Huge thanks to all involved, I am really excited to be invited to the even this year and mingle with some of the best web industry professionals in New Zealand.

As well as being a participant I will also be working on the night filming the event with the Mohawk Media crew.

Huge thanks to Joel, Will and Breccan who have worked on Speed of Sound. Unfortunately Joel won’t be at the ceremony as he just left for Hong Kong to do awesome AI stuff. On that note – Come on NZ, hurry up and develop leading edge AI institutes so we can keep people like Joel in the country!
